Student Organizations

Four students gleefully walk on campus

Geography Club

Geography Club is open to undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff. The purpose of Geography Club is to encourage informal social activities related in some way to the field of Geography. Activities vary depending on membership and may include field trips, movie showings, information exchange about upcoming events on campus and networking with the Department of Geography and Atmospheric Science Alums.

Geography Graduate Student Organization

The Geography Graduate Student Organization promotes service and community among all members of the Department of Geography and Atmospheric Science. Membership is open and encouraged among all current Geography and Atmospheric Science Department graduate students to foster communication both among the graduate students as well as between graduate students and faculty.

Each year, the organization presents the Globe-O-Mania competition held during Geography Awareness Week as well as sponsors other events such as a film series and orienteering with Orienteer Kansas. Geography GSO also organizes a departmental brownbag lecture series, the annual Association of American Geographer (AAG) graduate student practice session lunch, lunch room coffee sales, and conference trips.

To become involved in planning or attending these events, please join us at any GSO meeting. Information can be found on the bulletin board outside the lunch room or by contacting geoggso@ku.edu.

AMS Student Chapter

The KU student chapter of the American Meteorological Society is open to anyone interested in meteorology. The chapter sponsors social and career-related activities. Meetings are announced in atmospheric science classes, email and through the AMS Student Chapter Facebook page.

The KU AMS club is an active local chapter of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) established in 1992. The club is open to KU students of all majors with an interest in meteorology. The chapter sponsors both social and academic events, and is a great way for students to meet one another.

KU AMS has sponsored events every month and some include:

  • Science Olympiad
  • Severe Weather Symposium
  • Atmospheric Science Info Night
  • KU Severe Weather Awareness Week
  • Field trips to local news stations, operational forecasting centers, and more
  • Networking/Career events

Club meetings are tentatively held on the first Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m. in Lindley 405.  Membership dues are $10, cash or check.  Please make checks payable to the “KU AMS Club”.  Membership dues can be turned in to the club treasurer, Evan Direnzo. “The American Meteorological Society promotes the development and dissemination of information and education on the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences and the advancement of their professional applications. Founded in 1919, AMS has a membership of more than 11,000 professionals, professors, students, and weather enthusiasts. AMS publishes nine atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic journals — in print and online — sponsors more than 12 conferences annually, and offers numerous programs and services.” (Source: AMS website)
